H1N1 (Swine Flu)

General Information

H1N1 flu (swine flu) continues to make headlines worldwide. This version of H1N1 flu is a combination of Avian Influenza, Human Influenza and Porcine Influenza. H1N1 Flu is spread like regular flu - through coughing, sneezing, shaking hands, sharing glasses or utensils, or from inanimate surfaces contaminated by a sick person. The symptoms are also the same – fever, headaches, body aches, and general tiredness.

There are preventative measures you can take to help stop the spread of the H1N1 (Swine Flu) including the practice of cleaning and disinfecting surfaces such as doorknobs, desks, tables and restroom fixtures with an EPA (Health Canada DIN) registered disinfectant. When EPA registered disinfectants are used on a daily basis, they will help keep environmental surfaces from being a source of the flu bug (Influenza).

Buckeye recommends disinfecting against H1N1 (Swine flu) with Sanicare Quat-64™. This product has kill claims for Avian Influenza, along with Human Influenza and 3 Porcine viruses. Other good choices noted on the EPA list of registered disinfectants against Influenza A viruses are Sanicare Lemon, Mint, and Pine Quat™, Sanicare Quat-128™, Sanicare Quat-256™, Supergard™, Buckeye Terminator™, WATCHDOG NF™, Sanicare II™, Sanicare DRC™ and Sanicare Disinfecting Wipes™.

With all Buckeye disinfectants, be sure to follow all label instructions. Here are a few tips to follow when disinfecting:

  • Remove heavy soil deposits first (For heavily soiled areas, a pre-cleaning step is required)
  • Most disinfectants require a 10-minute dwell time
  • Use personal protective equipment when indicated

CDC Recommendations

The CDC recommends washing your hands as one of the best defenses against the flu. One of the best preventative measures you can take to help stop the spread of H1N1 (Swine Flu) is to have an effective hand hygiene program in place.
